This digitization goes far beyond automation or robotization.<\/h4>\n<p>Owners of SMEs in Quebec often question whether digitization will lead to business results, arguing that growth is achieved by increasing sales.<\/p>\n<p>They are absolutely right. New digital tools need to empower sales and operations teams and facilitate collaboration. And management teams need to see a clear return on investment, as well as benefits that address the labor shortage in a concrete manner.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The results of the recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stiq.com\/en\/quebec-industrial-barometer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quebec Industrial Barometer<\/a> <\/strong>survey conducted by the STIQ raise a major dilemma: Yes, digitization does pay off, but it can be difficult and costly to achieve.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study\u2019s finding show that the more SME integrate digital technologies, the better their business results. Nevertheless, the findings also identify some major barriers to digitization:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lack of skilled labor<\/li>\n<li>Hard to measure ROI<\/li>\n<li>Cost and time overruns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We dove deeper into the results of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stiq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/STIQ-Barometre-13e-edition-_-WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13th Edition of the Barometer<\/a><\/strong>, which collected responses from some 500 SMEs across Quebec. Here are our three main takeaways regarding the digitization of SMEs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1363\" src=\"https:\/\/centralio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/stiq-barometre-industriel-integration-technologies-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centralio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/stiq-barometre-industriel-integration-technologies-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/centralio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/stiq-barometre-industriel-integration-technologies-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/centralio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/stiq-barometre-industriel-integration-technologies-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/centralio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/stiq-barometre-industriel-integration-technologies-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>1. B2B sales processes have to modernize<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The labor shortage will continue to curb the growth of SMEs over the next few years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rising wages are putting further pressure on companies already facing rising input costs. More than ever, sales teams will need to be efficient and have access to powerful digital tools.<\/p>\n<p>The Barometer survey measured 10 different digital technologies being integrating by manufacturing SMEs. The results show that the degree of integration varies greatly from one technology to another.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that few SMEs have integrated two key technologies for modern and efficient B2B sales management, namely PRM and CPQ software.<\/p>\n<h4>CPQ software: product configurator<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>According to the STIQ survey, only 10% of SMEs use product configurator software.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Product configuration software \u2013 also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/information-technology\/glossary\/configure-price-quote-cpq-application-suites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ)<\/a> software \u2013 lets you accurately configure interactive bids autonomously, in just minutes.<\/p>\n<p>There are often a multitude of variables that can suddenly change in the sales process. That means creating and approving bids can become a bottleneck to closing sales.<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, companies don\u2019t want to change their processes if it will result in pricing errors, unapproved discounts, or promises to customers of product configurations that aren\u2019t feasible in production.<\/p>\n<p>Interactive quotes can make selling easier by allowing sales reps and channel partners to quickly and easily put together highly professional and visual customized quotes that showcase the brand and its products. They also allow for real-time tracking and electronic signatures.<\/p>\n<p>When a CPQ is properly deployed and used, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/resources\/research-reports\/state-of-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results<\/a> can be impressive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quotes are generated <strong>10x<\/strong> faster<\/li>\n<li>Path from submission to payment is <strong>2x<\/strong> faster<\/li>\n<li>New rep training is shortened by <strong>30%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>PRM software: channel partner management<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>According to the STIQ survey, only <strong>22%<\/strong> of SMEs use customer or supplier management software.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/information-technology\/glossary\/partner-relationship-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Partner Relationship Management (PRM)<\/a> software lets partners access your data (products, pricing, etc.) in real time. That means faster approvals, faster closing and by extension, more sales.<\/p>\n<p>SMEs that sell through a B2B network of resellers, distributors, or dealers have a significant information management challenge on their hands. The channel partner network has to master the product offer and be able to access real-time pricing data. Giving resellers access to a digital tool that lets them sell configurable products autonomously can be a game-changer.<\/p>\n<p>PRM software also gives SME managers a tool for measuring the performance of the channel network in real time. This makes it easier for them to control the representation of their product offering. They can even share reports and dashboards with partners to help them track performance indicators or better seize on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.ca\/encyclopedia\/upselling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upselling<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.ca\/encyclopedia\/cross-selling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cross-selling<\/a> opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>PRM software is a modern day tool for managing a channel ecosystem in a consistent, predictable and productive manner. It\u2019s a powerful tool for any SME looking to expand its marketing strategies outside of Quebec.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Digital solutions have to be accessible<\/h3>\n<p>According to the results of the STIQ Barometer, the largest SMEs (100 to 500 employees) proportionally invest more in digital technologies than the smallest (10 to 19 employees). This gap between the smallest and largest companies has not narrowed since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The reason? It appears that the digital solutions being offered to SMEs are often too complex, too expensive, and too time consuming to implement. Smaller SMEs cannot afford to slow down their growth or tie up scarce resources in a protracted digital transformation project. They simply don\u2019t have the bandwidth or flexibility.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe software better come with an arm\u2019s length of benefits, because it\u2019s a costly initiative. We\u2019re talking the same price range, whether it\u2019s for a small company or a large one. Making Industry 4.0 profitable is a lot harder for me than it is for a large company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0Serge Fraser, Optimoule (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EQq6UwCxMZE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STIQ, 2019<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>More support<br \/>\n<\/strong>The sheer magnitude and duration of a technology implementation can be overwhelming for many management teams, which often don\u2019t know where to start or how to proceed. The moral of the story is that technological tools that come without support usually remain on the shelf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More customization<br \/>\n<\/strong>Management teams also worry that consultants will propose solutions that don\u2019t fully meet the company\u2019s specific needs. In sales, the solution has to be adopted by a diverse group of stakeholders. You can\u2019t just impose a \u201cnew software\u201d and expect everyone to learn to use it productively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Less complexity<br \/>\n<\/strong>Another crippling fear of management teams? The company will end up with a \u201cwhite elephant\u201d: a large-scale, high-profile initiative that brings more costs than benefits, and that becomes a nightmare to operate or maintain.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The ROI of digital projects have be measured<\/h3>\n<p>The STIQ report shows that SMEs are hungry for new technologies that can help them grow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>42% of the companies surveyed have implemented new technological tools for business development.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report also makes the benefits of investing in digital transformation clear to see. Firms that have integrated or that plan to integrate multiple digital technologies (six or more) outperform those that have integrated or that plan to integrate none or only one (see graph 28).<\/p>\n<p>Firms that integrate multiple technology tools report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greater increase in sales and number of employees<\/li>\n<li>Faster new customer development<\/li>\n<li>Higher probability of exporting internationally (outside the U.S.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>That being said, 48% of SMEs say the difficulty of evaluating ROI is a barrier to digitization.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Companies are skeptical about the profitability of digitization.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCompanies question the profitability of investing in digitization. We\u2019re investing in tools without any idea what the return will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Julie Bouffard, Groupe PMI<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While revenue growth is important, profitable revenue growth is even more so. SMEs that invest in technology to drive sales growth and optimize operations can generate a return if the technology directly leads to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better efficiency and productivity<\/li>\n<li>Bigger sales<\/li>\n<li>Fewer pricing and purchase order errors<\/li>\n<li>Stable or bigger gross margins<\/li>\n<li>Access to data that facilitates decision making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Simplification is the name of the (digital) game<\/h4>\n<p>Accelerating the growth of an SME requires simplification \u2013 particularly when it comes to B2B sales management.
